What is the role and purpose of the Board of Directors?

The role is to represent the students, parents, staff and greater community when
making decisions for the school. The purpose of the Board of Directors is to
conduct and oversee the affairs of the School in the establishment, financial
management, and on-going development of the school.  Activities include
establishing policy, approving, and monitoring budget, establishing employment
agreements, terminating and compensating employees and contractors, leasing
property, setting long-term goals and stewardship of the assets, while fostering
fundraising and solicitations.

What is the process to request an agenda topic for a Board meeting?

An agenda topic is not necessarily determined simply by request but is to be vetted
for its degree of importance, relevance to Board duties and responsibilities, and
availability of resources to allot time and focus from the Board. Please see ‘How do I
communicate with the DSCS Board’ to learn how to contact the Board so that it may
be determined whether your request will be handled as a future agenda item by the
Board.

How do I communicate with the DSCS Board?

A message can be sent at any time to the Board President and/or the Board
Secretary via email (board@dstarcs.org) or the school communication tool
ParentSquare. Please note that much like a ‘public comment’ at a board meeting, the
board is not at liberty to discuss any issue, address any concerns, or engage in
conversation regarding a decision, past or future, or position because of any direct
communication received from the public unless it is done in a public meeting as an
agenda item. Once vetted, an item presented to the board in the form of a personal
message, outreach or request may be considered for comment, review, discussion, or
decision at a future board meeting.

Where do I find the Agenda and Minutes of Board Meetings?

As stated in our bylaws, Agendas and Minutes are made available on our website.

What is the Board’s policy on Public Comment?

Guidelines for the assemblage of all public governing bodies are outlined in Arizona
Open Meeting Law documentation, and all DSCS School Board practices adhere to
this when conducting meetings. This includes the opportunity for public comment if
the governing body chooses to offer it, though it is not required by law for a
governing body to do so. Currently, the DSCS Governing Board provides
opportunities for public comment at every Board meeting. This remains at the
discretion of the board on a meeting-by-meeting basis.

When are Board Meetings held?

The DSCS Governing Board makes every effort to maintain a regularly scheduled
monthly meeting, which is typically the third Monday of every month, generally held
at 3:00pm. This is subject to change as necessary to ensure the widest availability of
directors. As required by AZ Open Meeting Law, public notice is given no less than
24 hours prior to the meeting held by a public governing body.
