Three Ways to Support Desert Star as a Volunteer:
As a state charter school, Desert Star does not receive
as much funding per child as district schools. Parental
support and participation is crucial to the quality of
education and the financial success of our school. All
families are requested to contribute 50 hours of volunteer
time per school year. Parent participation also keeps
our school community alive and connected. Research has
proven that children fare better in school when they see
their parents are active and a part of their school life.
1) The Parent Council
The Parent Council organizes the volunteer needs of the
school and tracks parent volunteer donations of time.
All parents of children Kindergarten through 7th are invited
to monthly Parent Council meetings. Meeting dates and
times are posted in the school newsletter. Parents may
also wish to participate as a Classroom Representative
for their child’s class. Each grade has 1-2 parents
representatives at Parent Council meetings, Class Reps
are also available to the teacher regarding the needs
of the class.
2) Volunteering in the Classroom:
Please contact your child’s teacher regarding volunteering
in the classroom. All volunteers must sign in and out
at the office. Please note that parent volunteers who
are directly supervised and within eyesight of a teacher
will not need a fingerprint clearance card. Those who
are alone with students in a classroom, the playground,
or driving on a field trip will be required to have fingerprint
clearance on file. Also parents who attend school sponsored
overnight field trips are required to have fingerprint
clearance. If you are planning on volunteering regularly
or driving for field trips please come to the school office
for fingerprinting instructions and forms. This precaution
is for the safety of your child and all children in the
school.
3)
Community Volunteers:
Community volunteerism is greatly valued at Desert Star.
We have been very fortunate to have had many local community
members donate in-kind, their time and assistance to our
school. It truly does “take a village”. If
you know someone who might be excited about what we offer
at DSCS please have them contact the school office.
Please
share your talent, you are an important part of this community
school!? Call 928-282-0171 or e-mail.
