Parent Resources
Parent Involvement
As parents of students at Desert Star Community School,
you are given the opportunity to grow with your children
in a unique educational environment. Parent participation
is an essential and integral part of your children’s
educational experience and serves to unify families and
create a strong sense of community.
At Desert Star parents can participate in a wide variety
of activities such as: serving as a Board member - or
on a Board committee, volunteering through the Parent
Council, helping your class teacher, participating in
fundraising events and festivals, and helping in the school
office .
The Parent Council
The
Parent Council includes all parents and guardians of children
who attend Desert Star Community School. Parent Council
meetings provide a means for parents to be informed on
school issues, to offer their input and ideas as well
as to raise concerns and parent initiatives. Generally
there are two Co-chairs who organize and facilitate monthly
meetings and attend the School Board meetings.
The
Parent Council also helps to organize various committees
to serve the school. The Parent Council supports and organizes
families in fulfilling their volunteer time commitments.
Parent Volunteers
As
a community school, the active participation of parents
both within and outside of the classroom is essential
in supporting the school’s educational program.
Parents’ professional, cultural and creative knowledge,
talents and abilities help to make Desert Star a vibrant,
dynamic learning environment. Many of our activities and
programs rely on the skill and generosity of parents.
The Parent Council can match your interests with an appropriate
volunteer activity. Please call the school office at (928)
282-0171 to find out who to contact.
Parents
are strongly encouraged to volunteer at least 50 hours
per school year, that’s about 1 hour per week. Because
Desert Star Community School acknowledges that circumstances
may not allow some parents to be involved in the school
to extent that they might wish, parental involvement is
not a requirement of school enrollment.
