Kindergarten

Kindergarten

Waldorf-inspired schools recognize that the young child learns primarily through imitation and example. Great care is taken to provide an environment that brings nurturing guidance and cooperation into the child's world of imagination and fantasy. The week is rhythmically structured to include storytelling and puppetry, creative work and play, singing and creative movement, games and finger plays, crafts, art activities, and fairy tales.

The upper case alphabet and numbers 1-10 are introduced through imaginative stories and multi-sensory, hands-on activities.

Tuition

Kindergarten

The Arizona State Legislature passed in 2009 a ruling to only fund schools for a half day Kindergarten program.  The State of Arizona has permitted charter and public schools to implement tuition plans to fund the continuation of full day kindergarten programs.

Desert Star will offer a full day program for the school year 2013-14.  Our focus will be an educational program with an experienced Waldorf teacher and assistants.  We have implemented tuition to offset some of the loss of State funding.  The tuition for the entire school year is $1200 and various payment options are available.

If this is a financial challenge that is unattainable for your family, there is financial assistance available.  A limited number of scholarships will be available to qualifying students.

Grades 1-8 Desert Star Community School is FREE

All students at DSCS are requested to make a Student Activity Donation.  The donation for the 2013-2014 school year is $250 per student.  This donation is to support curriculum activities that benefit all students.

Philosophy

The philosophy of Desert Star Community School is founded upon the conviction that children are innately curious about themselves and the world; they inherently want to learn, discover, and create. The role of the school is to nourish and guide this natural exuberance, energy, and delight in the quest for meaning and knowledge. Creative approaches in which the arts are integrated into academic learning serve to engage the child holistically and provide an experiential, multi-sensory context for understanding intellectual concepts. The experiential study of world cultures enriches the student’s expanding world-view giving an appreciation for diversity, flexibility of thinking, and an intrinsic empathic understanding of social and cultural issues. The school’s overall educational approach is designed to instill in its students not only high standards for academic achievement but also a sustaining degree of intellectual curiosity, creative thinking, problem solving and creative self-expression, as well as valuable interpersonal and intrapersonal life skills. We believe that true education involves more than just the intellect; it engages and integrates every aspect of the child: cognitive, physical, emotional, and social as well as the creative-imaginative self.

Both Steiner and Gardner created an educational approach that provides a holistic understanding of the child’s needs and potentials. By addressing diverse learning styles these methods provide a means to nurture success and academic mastery for all students. Thomas Armstrong, author of Multiple Intelligences in the classroom, said, “Waldorf Education embodies in a truly organic sense all of Howard Gardner’s seven intelligences. Rudolph Steiner’s vision is a whole one, not simply an amalgam of the seven intelligences (Armstrong, 1994).” At Desert Star we use these complementary educational philosophies to develop curriculum methods that lead to mastery of standards and that cultivate and expand all intelligence areas in a developmentally appropriate context.

Desert Star teachers will understand and address Steiner’s indications for the developmental stages of childhood while respecting each child’s individual abilities and rate of progress. They will strive to provide a child-centered approach to learning that will support development as it emerges and will meet the child’s needs for individualized approaches. This will be accomplished by providing advanced learning opportunities, remediation, or time and resources to pursue special interests and passions. We will place a high priority on our students “learning how to learn” through creative problem solving, discovery and inquiry based approaches rather than rote instruction.

Vision

The vision of Desert Star Community School, a Waldorf Inspired Charter School, is to nurture and inspire a community of learners through an innovative, holistic approach to education. Our enriched program enables students to reach their full potential through Waldorf pedagogy combined with Multiple Intelligences philosophy, an integrated arts curriculum, and multi-cultural experiences. Our goal is to bring forth an education that is vibrant and alive.

Three years of investigation and research into leading schools and methodologies provided insight into how to enhance a child’s ability to learn. Desert Star brings together several proven approaches in an innovative way. The creative means to engage the child’s love of learning, are rooted in Rudolf Steiner’s Waldorf approach to education. We also incorporate Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence theory in order to teach to the various intelligences of the child. Children learn in many different ways, some are: logical, linguistic, kinesthetic, rhythmic, spatial orientation as well as through inter and intrapersonal relationships. Desert Star teaches to all the intelligences and thus engages and meets students who may struggle in traditional settings.

A true education involves more than just the intellect; it engages and integrates every aspect of the person: cognitive, physical, emotional, and social as well as the creative-imaginative aspects of the self. It is our conviction that a holistic approach to education is the key to social and cultural transformation.

It is our intention that Desert Star graduates become adults who are innovative creative thinkers as well as socially and environmentally responsible citizens who can help make the world a better place.

Mission

The mission of Desert Star Community School is to provide an education that considers the needs of the whole child, develops the full diversity of human intelligence within each individual, and instills a life-long love of learning. Our purpose is to inspire and empower students to reach their full academic and creative potential so they may lead fulfilling, purposeful lives and make a positive contribution to the multi-cultural society and world community in which they live.
